“I believe that it is beauty that sustains us and it is a good conscience that lets us sleep at night. I pursue both of these in my artistic practice, working with textiles that feed the senses and the soul and working with artistic partners who are honored and rewarded for their contribution.”
Anita Gopalaswamy
Studio Ruyee is the manifestation of Anita’s many interwoven threads
Textiles created by Studio Ruyee’s artisans in India are accretive in nature. Each piece expresses the interaction between the labor of one phase atop the labor of an earlier stage. From the farmers in Karnataka who feed mulberry to the silk worms to the thread makers, dyers, and weavers in West Bengal, each member of this creative web builds on the labors of their partners. Similar relationships prevail in the creation of textiles made of wool and cotton. In addition, positive environmental and market forces are required to bring this art to life.
Born in Bhopal, Anita Gopalaswamy has had the fortune to have lived in several regions in and outside of India, including Jamshedpur, Bangalore, Bombay, Pittsburgh, Bangkok, Singapore, and Minneapolis. Anita was raised within a tradition that celebrates heritage, authenticity, and a vibrant palette. In this tradition, not only the eye must be pleased, but the impact of textures on an individual’s tactile experience are part of the design.
